Myeongdong Kyoja Branch: Kongguksu, Bibim Guksu, and Dumplings

A review of my visit to Myeongdong Kyoja Branch, which has held its ground in the heart of Myeongdong for a long time.

Beneath the name Myeongdong Kyoja on the red signboard is a Michelin Guide selection mark. The authority of an old-timer restaurant that has been going since 1966 can be felt even from the building's exterior wall.
Each table has a number tag, and diners sit packed together enjoying their meals. The seats are closely spaced.
A photo of the 2nd-floor hall. Serving robots carry bowls between the tables while diners continue their meals at their own seats. The screen on the wall shows the menu along with prices.
Next to the dumplings in a steamer, a self-serve kimchi container, water cups, and seasoning containers sit side by side.
Steamed dumplings, with the filling faintly visible through the wrappers, come packed full in the steamer.
Chewy-looking green noodles sit atop creamy soybean broth, garnished with julienned cucumber and sesame seeds.
Green noodles in a metal bowl are tossed in a spicy sauce and generously topped with julienned cucumber, julienned carrot, and sesame seeds. It isn't very spicy.

This is Myeongdong Kyoja Branch, where I stopped by during an outing in Myeongdong, South Korea. It's located near Myeongdong Station, on the same street as the main branch, Myeongdong 10-gil. It has long been famous for its kalguksu and dumplings, so it was a place I had always wanted to visit at least once.

This place is known for its kalguksu and dumplings, but I had the kongguksu, the bibim guksu, and the dumplings. The dumplings are a bite-sized portion, and when you bite into them the wrapper tears and a whole lot of juice comes out, so they were really delicious. That said, you could scald yourself if you eat one in a single bite, so please check first. I also really enjoyed the bibim guksu and the kongguksu. If you ask, you can get extra noodles for free.

The service, however, is not good. It's chaotic because there are so many customers, and there were tables that hadn't been wiped down properly. If you're unlucky, it seems two guests can end up seated alone at a four-person table. It also seems to take quite a while even after you ask for extra noodles, so it would be a good idea to order them in advance.

The restaurant is split into halls on the 1st and 2nd floors, and it has a great many seats. The turnover is fast too, so even when there was a wait, we got in quickly. It was within walking distance of Myeongdong Station. There's no separate parking lot, so it's more convenient to go by subway or bus than by car.
